On Mar. 15, 2024, Salisbury High School welcomed exchange students visiting from Germany for two weeks. During their stay, they also traveled to Washington, D.C., and New York City. While learning about American high school practices and curriculums, the German students also organized presentations in individual classrooms, teaching Salisbury students about German culture and schooling.
Exchange programs are designed to provide an immersive experience in another culture, language, and educational system. Students temporarily live with host families, attend classes at Salisbury, and participate in local activities with their hosts.
Nathan S., a Salisbury junior and student host, shared his experiences with the exchange. “My experience with the exchange was a lot of fun. It was cool that we were both able to learn simultaneously about our lifestyles and differences. One of the best parts was exploring different locally. It was also cool to see how similar we are despite coming from different parts of the world.”
Exchange programs encourage cultural discussions, develop language skills, and broaden students’ perspectives by exposing them to different customs and traditions. They briefly visited Salisbury Elementary School, reading books and connecting with younger students.
Salisbury High School’s German and English teacher, Frau Verna, expressed her experience with the exchange and how important she believes international programs are. “Our experience with the exchange was positive. It’s a unique opportunity to learn another culture and build friendships. Some students even followed or added them on social media. I think that international exchanges are important since they allow you to find a broader legitimate perspective of the world.”
Many Salisbury students found the visiting students’ way of life and differences fascinating, creating curiosity and encouraging them to ask many questions.
Salisbury senior Kali B. expressed her experience with the students during her normal school week. “Asking them questions about their thoughts and opinions about America as well as what their life in Germany is like. One conversation I had with one of the exchange students was about the different flavors of milk they have in Germany and his favorite flavor. They have flavors like salted caramel, strawberry cheesecake, and interestingly, popcorn.”
