This season, the Salisbury High School field hockey team has accomplished a milestone by qualifying for both districts and leagues. This is the biggest accomplishment that Salisbury has had in awhile.
The team is led by Jane Brennan, Anne Ruiz and coach Kim DeFazio that have been coaching the girls through this season. They have won 15 games and lost only 2 games.
“I think this is the most special team I ever coached. These girls listen and want to do better,” Coach Ruiz said.
“Super proud of all the hard work and commitment over the last months- and even years that these girls have worked together,” Jane Brennan
There are seven players who go to Central Catholic High School who are really important to the team and nine of 11 motivated starters that are returning starters.
“I am motivated by the team and our coaches. Everyone is there for everyone and that is what motivated me,” Sarah Beckage said.
“It is a really great feeling going into leagues,” one of the top scoring players, a junior Gwyneth Defazio said. “Qualifying is something we set our minds to at the beginning of the season and being able to do it is a really rewarding feeling. I am proud to be on this team and I am proud to make history for our team.”
Looking ahead, the Falcons are preparing for the district tournament where they will face some tough competition.
“So far the team is just practicing really hard and putting a lot of work in. We are also doing lots of recovery to keep our bodies healthy for these next weeks of games. We’re watching films to help prepare for our tough opponents and staying ready for anything,” a junior Caroline Gedney said.
The community is rallying behind the girls, with students and parents planning to attend the upcoming games.
“It is so exciting to watch,” a junior’s mom said Bevin Beckage. “This team is resilient and has worked so hard to get where they are. 15-3, is an unbelievably amazing season. This team has pulled together on and off the field. Coach Brennan knows her girls, she knows how to motivate the team, to look forward not behind and most importantly- to have fun and enjoy each and every moment.”
Salisbury Falcons will play Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Catasauqua High School to continue their journey in the leagues and districts with their skill, dedication and support from the community. Go Falcons!
