As someone who has been playing Minecraft religiously for the past ten years or so, I was super excited when I heard there was finally going to be a Minecraft movie.
‘A Minecraft Movie’ is a 2025 fantasy adventure comedy, inspired by Mojang Studios’ iconic video game, Minecraft. Directed by Jared Hess, best known for Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, the film features a screenplay by Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James, and Chris Galletta. The cast includes Jason Momoa as Garrett, Jack Black as Steve, Emma Myers as Natalie, Danielle Brooks as Dawn and Sebastian Hansen as Henry.
I went to see the Minecraft movie a few days after it was released, just enough time for the theaters to be less crowded and noisy. I picked a comfy theater where I could relax and enjoy the film. Tickets were about $15.
As for the movie itself, I thought it was pretty corny, but honestly, that’s kind of expected with a movie like this. Even so, it had a great balance of adult humor and kid-friendly jokes, which worked well for the wide range of Minecraft fans in the audience.
There were a few things that personally bugged me, but nothing too major. For example, the doors/openings in the movie were 2×2 blocks to fit a “player,” while in the game, a player only needs a 1×2 space.
Also, the way the Piglin Brutes drank nether wart made no sense, nether wart is used for brewing potions, not for drinking.
And lastly, the idea that Piglin Brutes wanted to go to the Overworld for more gold was kind of off since the Nether is probably the best place to mine gold (even if it’s just nuggets, you get way more there).
Overall, I think the movie was pretty great, even if there were a few inconsistencies between the game and the film. I’m sure there were other details I missed, but honestly, that’s expected with any game-to-movie adaptation. I recommend checking out the Minecraft movie, especially if you’re a longtime fan.
