The Salisbury Football Team is off to a 3-3 start this year, with their most recent win coming in the 4th quarter against Catasauqua. A possible factor of their success on the field is the increase in roster size. The Falcons showcased a team of 67 players this season with new names making an immediate impact.
This increase in roster size is a surprise to most spectators. In the last 30 football games Salisbury has played, they won 2 in the regular season. Last year the Falcons went 0-10 in the regular season and won a consolation game against Shenandoah.
Recruiting efforts came from both coaches and players this year. Senior of the football team, Andrew Nemeh said, “I did some recruiting but a major part of the recruiting was done by Coach Dizenzo.”
“He was just looking for kids to join the team not only to become good at football but to become better people,” Andrew added.
Salisbury started to turn some heads this year after their shut-out win against Wilson in week three. Outfielder-turned-free safety AJ Moren was a big part of the defensive shutout, not allowing a touchdown. AJ has never played football before this season.
AJ was asked if he felt any pressure playing in his first year, and he answered, “No, my only worry is my assignment.”
The roster not only showcases key newcomers but also overall depth. The new head coach of the football team, Coach Kevin DiZenzo said, “The new depth allows for the best look possible during practice.”
This roster size also shows the potential to have one-way starters and rotation off the bench to conserve energy.
The Falcons still have much of their season left and their final outcome is yet to be projected. Salisbury takes on Saucon Valley at home this week.
