Aren’t you sick and tired of the same old holiday items that roll around every year? Don’t you want something new that will explode your taste buds? Every year the holiday season rolls in and so do the food companies’ yummy sweets. We know how it goes; they already know what’s coming, such as the Chick-fil-A Valentine nuggets or the holiday drinks at Shake Shack. Well, Dunkin Donuts expanded its bubble. They tried something new and made a shortbread cookie inspired by National Cookie Day on Dec. 4th as their latest holiday-themed item on their menu.
Dunkin Donuts always offers holiday-themed items or drinks. Although Cookie Butter Cold Brew has been on the menu for three years, the company knew it needed to change to attract new customers, so it added new cookies, drinks, and donuts to its menu. This year, it brought back ‘Free Donuts Wednesday’ by creating this new cookie, which is a big improvement over its previous status.
According To the Dunkin Donuts website, “It’s baked the Dunkin’ way and crafted to look like a classic Strawberry Frosted Sprinkle Donut. It features a buttery cookie base topped with sweet, pink frosting and rainbow sprinkles. It’s even pre-packaged to enjoy on the go.”
There were so many mixed reviews on this cookie. Some people said it was basic or too plain, while others thought it was the greatest addition to the menu. Until I tried it, I didn’t understand the hype surrounding it.
The truth is, I still don’t.
This sugar cookie looked like a sugar cookie, layered with light pink frosting and colorful sprinkles. It looked like the perfect cookie from a cartoon. The packaging was top-tier, and the nice pop of pink made it feel exciting.
It wasn’t until I took a bite that I realized that this cookie looked and tasted like the sugar cookies you would get from Weis. The only edition on this cookie was the hole cut out to allow it to remind you of a donut, the sprinkles, and the thinness of the cookie itself.
The price of one Shortbread Cookie from Dunkin Donuts is three dollars and seventy-three cents and that’s the price of a six-pack cookie box from Weis.
Yes, Dunkin Donuts didn’t scam us, but they sure did overcharge us. They stated exactly as described and everything they said about it checked out. I personally didn’t think it tasted as great as they described it just because it’s such a basic vanilla-flavored taste that any sugar or shortbread cookie would have. I will say though that the cookie did smell like a super nice birthday cake.
If I were to rate it out of 5 stars, I’d give it a 3 for taste because it just wasn’t a “brand” new item, but adding a hole in the middle makes it creative because not a lot of places have a cookie that has a hole in the middle.
The thing is because it’s new it’s going to draw customers in and money will be spent, but it’s when those customers realize that it’s nothing more than any other cookie. Now, the question we ask ourselves is…
Did Dunkin Donuts create something completely new or is it reused?
