Malcom Thomas, a sophomore at Salisbury High School, started the Peace Club, a club focused on being kind to one another and including everyone, regardless of differences. The club has already started to bring the halls of Salisbury High School together.
Peace Club encourages new friendships, understanding and respect. What makes this even more meaningful is the leadership behind it. Starting a club takes a significant amount of courage. Malcolm is proving that you can do anything, no matter what. That’s what makes Peace Club so interesting.
Imagine if each of us took a moment to notice the small struggles, the quiet victories or the moments of joy around us. Each smile, each kind word, each act of understanding can ripple through our school in ways we may never have seen before- but they matter. Together, we can build a community where students, teachers, and staff feel seen, valued and supported- a place where kindness, love and shared humanity guide our actions. That is what Peace Club thrives off of.
With support from Mrs. Leah Saliby, the library media specialist at Salisbury High School, the club has potential to grow even more and continue spreading the message of Peace Club.
Mr. Michael Anderson, counselor at Salisbury, said, “I think that it’s awesome that Salisbury has so many opportunities for everyone here at Salisbury. It’s cool that everyone can go and, yeah, it’s awesome.”
Katelyn Specht, a sophomore at Salisbury High School, said, “it’s a great idea, and it could really help the school.”
Ms. Anne Ruiz, English and journalism teacher at Salisbury said, “It’s such a unique club to bring to the school.” She followed that with, “Malcolm was inducted into the National Honor Society,” showing Malcolm’s commitment to school and the school community. She firmly believes that the Peace Club is an amazing opportunity to bring to Salisbury.
As a Salisbury student, I believe that the Peace Club is a great club due to its seven principles: compassion, truly caring about others and understanding their feelings; harmony, living and working together peacefully; solidarity, standing together and supporting one another; empathy, truly feeling and understanding what others are going through; respect, treating everyone with dignity; and connection.
Knowing that you are never alone. And finally, peace, choosing calm cooperation and understanding conflict.
