Gwyn DeFazio scored 100 points on the field hockey team at Salisbury High School on August 26, 2025. This accomplishment was made during a home game against Northwestern.
Gwyn herself answered a few questions, as well as a couple others who are proud and inspired by her achievements.
Gwyn has been playing field hockey for 11 years; she plays both midfield and forward. According to The Chronicle, forwards do most of the scoring for the team, as they are very offensive minded players. Midfielders cover the most of the field, helping on both offense and defense.
The point system for Salisbury High School can be easily confused with just scoring goals. Gwyn was awarded with credit for not just her goals, but also her assists.
Assists count as 1 point and goals are 2 points. Gwyn spoke about how many points she has scored per year,
“Freshman year I had 15 points, sophomore year I had 21 points, junior year I had 63 points.” She worked incredibly hard her junior year, and it shows.
Janna Kelley, her teammate and fellow midfielder, expresses how proud she is of Gwyn saying, “I am super proud of Gwyn and honestly really inspired by her. I’ve seen how much work she puts in and it motivates me to be better. She deserves this and all her accomplishments, and I’m really grateful to be able to play and learn from her.”
Gwyn is a positive influence both on and off the field, especially to the underclassmen.
She also prioritizes her well-being off the field.
“Off the field I lift and condition both in and out of season. I also try to maintain a balanced diet and make sure I am fueling myself to have energy to play. I also try to keep a positive attitude which helps with motivation and burnout.”
Team culture is an extremely important factor to have with any team, and is represented well through the field hockey team.
Coach Brennan explains her team culture as, “The culture is one of unity! Most of the girls have been friends for a long time, it has helped them understand each other on and off the field.”
Gwyn then went on to break the school record for both points and goals. Her and her teammate Kendra Morgan both reached achievements on their senior night. Kendra scored 100 points, and Gwyn has gone further and beaten the school record.
It’s no doubt that Gwyn is a critical player to the team, and that Salisbury Field Hockey team will miss her dearly.
She leaves us with a positive message to younger players saying, “Anything I have accomplished would not be possible without my teammates and coaches that have supported me. They have my back no matter what and are the reason I am able to succeed. Lean on the people around you and surround yourself with people that uplift you.”
